Thorbjorn Olesen Wins #TurkishAirlinesOpen
6th of November 2016 the Danish golf star Thorbjorn Olesen wrote history yet again being the youngest Dane ever to win four European Tour titles. The victory at Turkish Airlines Open is his third European Tour season in a row with a victory.
The first three days of the Turkisih Airlines Open Thorbjorn Olesen was performing world-class golf, going into the weekend with a six-shot lead and a course record at Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort, and had a seven-shot lead going into the final round on Sunday – this being the biggest lead after 54 holes in the history of the Turkish Airlines Open. On Sunday he started a big shaky, never been that many shots clear, however he overcame the challenges from his closest opponents who came very close, he resisted the pressure and with 20 under par he claimed his fourth title on the European Tour.
Winning with a margin of three is likewise the biggest of this championship ever. Not only is he setting records in Denmark and in the Turkish Airlines Open, his six-shot lead after 36 holes and seven-shot lead after 54 holes are the biggest leads after these numbers of holes of the European Tour season 2016. After some tough months this victory means a lot to the young golf star:
”It has been an unbelievable week and I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve got. I haven’t played well the last couple of months, so this victory means so much to me. I’m getting my confidence back and now I very much look forward to the last two tournaments of the season; South Africa Netbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player and the Dubai DP WORLD TOUR CHAMPIONSHiP.”
- Thorbjorn Olesen
The 2016 season has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Thorbjorn Olesen. He started off well being number two at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and BMW International Open in January 2016. Then Thorbjorn wrote history by being one of the two Danes competing at the Olympic Games in Rio this summer - no Danish golfers were part of the 1900 and 1904 Olympic Games when golf was last on the Olympic programme. Lately he only made three of his last 12 cuts but this weekend at the Turkish Airlines Open his performance was outstanding, and he wrote history by being the youngest Dane ever to win four European Tour titles.
For three European Tour seasons in a row Thorbjorn has won a tournament; In 2014 he won the ISPS HANDA Perth International, 2015 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and in 2016 Turkish Airlines Open. Only Thomas Bjorn has achieved more consecutive wins when he won a tournament for five consecutive years from 1998 to 2002.
