Bjarne Riis

Bjarne Riis is a former professional cyclist born in April 1964. He was born in Herning and because of his talent he was named ‘the eagle from Herning'. He was an all-rounder cyclist and he started his professional career at team Roland.

His first big achievement was in 1989 where he won the 9th stage at Giro d’Italia. This was only the start of his successful career. His greatest achievement came in 1996 where he won Tour de France. This achievement was the greatest of his career and to date he is still the only Dane who has ever won the Tour.

He won the Danish Road Championship in both 1992 and 1996.

In the spring of 2000 he ended his career at the age of 35 year because of too many injuries.

After his professional cycling career he was sports director of the Danish team Tinkoff. His latest project was in cooperation with Lars Seier Christensen. In 2016 they took over the sponsorship of the Danish Team Trefor and changed the name to Team Virtu Pro-Veloconcept.
